Race Preview - Beveridge Park Grand Prix of Cyclocross

Fife’s summer of cycling is set to close with another flagship cycling event for Fife – a cyclocross race at Beveridge Park in Kirkcaldy next month.

Portage Cycling have paired up with the Council’s Active Fife team to deliver the Beveridge Park Grand Prix, the park’s first ever cyclocross race, on Sunday 6th September 2015.

The instant sell out event has 123 riders signed up to take on the challenging tarmac and grassland circuit of 1.2 miles for a one hour race, plus one lap.

Executive Committee member, Councillor Mark Hood is pleased that the summer of cycling is welcoming cyclocross to Beveridge Park.

Despite the weather, this has been another fantastic summer of cycling events showcasing the hive of activity that is Fife’s cycling community.

The partners and volunteers working to deliver the summer of cycling have had another successful closed road criterium through the heart of Dunfermline and hosted the British National Junior Road Race Series in Kennoway. They’ve also supported a range of community events and races to give those who are new to cycling the opportunity to get involved.

It’s a priority for Fife Council to help to develop cycling locally for all ages and abilities and this festival has been a great example of how strong partnership working has delivered on that.

Cycling is a great way for families to be active. We have growing cycling clubs coaching children and young people, opportunities to learn to ride safely through Bikeability in Schools and with over 350 miles of cycleways and lots of 20mph residential zones, we live in an ideal place to get on your bike!
— Councillor Mark Hood

John McComisky from Portage Cycling added:

Cyclocross is huge in Fife, and many of the sports champions hail from the area. I am so pleased to have our local International racer Eileen Roe, and local Vet Champions Gary McCrae, racing in front of a home crowd in such a lovely setting.

Cyclocross is open to anyone of any ability to compete in; perhaps that’s what excites myself and our race partners Active Fife the most. I have enjoyed working with the Council’s Parks and Cycling Development staff. It’s amazing what can happen when you are working alongside people with vision!
— Jon McComisky, Race Organiser

Come along to Beveridge Park on Sunday 6th September to cheer on the riders. The race begins at 1pm.
