New Fife Venue For Summer Crossers

John McComisky updates on the latest addition to the Scottish CX calendar.

Greener Kirkcaldy’s first-ever Community Cyclocross race, at Dunnikier Park on Sunday 6th August, is shaping up to be a great event. Tickets are on sale now for the race and we’re making the finishing touches to an exciting 2.5 km course.

The course winds and swoops around a predominantly short grass, heathland and gravel parcours. There are plenty of switchbacks and adverse camber. There’s also a fair bit of climbing, which will challenge raw novices and seasoned cross aficionados alike.

The event is limited to 100 competitors and has a forty-five minutes plus a lap format. The emphasis is on encouraging first-timers to pin a number on and race in a low-pressure environment. We are expecting a good balance of male and female competitors and a wide range of experience, from compete newbies to seasoned racers.

The race will have a separate Male and Female podium which will be sponsored by Lang Toun Cycles in Kirkcaldy. Gift vouchers will be on offer for the first three in their respective classes.

There are also ten random spot prizes for all registered competitors. They have the chance to win water bottles, bum butter, lubes and levers!

The race takes place during Kirkcaldy Cycling Festival, an annual celebration of all things cycling. It is one of the main attractions at Greener Kirkcaldy’s Family Fun Day. There is further entertainments including live commentary and music, kid’s activities, live local radio broadcast from the park by K107fm, face painting, Dr Bike and a led ride around the course for the general public before the racers take to the grid.

Throughout the day there is on-site catering, access to toilets and refreshments from the Dunnikier Park Golf Club. The Oswald House Hotel are putting on a barbeque and refreshments.

So, if you are looking for a good way to ease into the cross season and have loads of fun, then the only place to be on Sunday 6th August is Kirkcaldy!

Registration opens at 12:30pm and the race starts at 2pm. Come along and make some noise as well as enjoy a festival atmosphere. To take part in the race book your ticket through the Greener Kirkcaldy website. Tickets cost £20. Sales end on Friday 30th July.

Thanks to the Oswald House Hotel, Dunnikier Golf Club, Dunnikier Park Community Development Group, Fife Council, Colin Chisholm, Paul Davies and Andrew Bell for supporting this event. And special thanks to the Greener Kirkcaldy volunteers who will be there on the day to help prepare the course.
