Scottish Cyclocross Series

The Scottish Cyclocross Series is co-ordinated by the Association annually. Series Races are organised by local clubs under British Cycling rules in partnership with Scottish Cycling.

Format

The Scottish Cyclocross Series, also known as SCX Series, normally takes place between September-December and consists of 6-8 races, hosted by a diverse mix of venues across Scotland. Series points are accumulated and the winner of each category crowned at the end of the season.

Gridding Process

For SCX series races, every rider from youth upwards will be gridded. Round one will be based on the previous series final standings, with appropriate discretion applied for riders changing age category. Round 2 will be based on the Round 1 results and the previous year’s standings (for those that couldn’t make the first race). Round 3 onwards will be based on this year’s series standings only. The Chief Commissaire can make such amendments as they deem necessary to ensure safe and fair racing.

All riders that are new or haven’t gained any series points will be randomly allocated a position at the back of the grid. The main reason for gridding all riders is to avoid the rush that happened in the past as the non-gridded riders jostled to join the back of the grid. Basing the grid position on recent performance should hopefully give everyone a good race experience. NOTE: Riders who are not present when their name is called will join the back of the grid - they will not be allowed to insert themselves into their original position on the grid! The gridding criteria can be viewed here.

Points Allocation

Series points are allocated for the top 50 riders in each age category with the top ten places getting proportionally more points as follows:-

1st-75pts; 2nd-70pts; 3rd-65pts; 4th-61pts; 5th-57pts; 6th-53pts; 7th-50pts; 8th-47pts; 9th-44pts; 10th-42pts;

For the riders in 11th to 50th place the points are 40 decreasing down to 1.

NOTE: There are no points awarded for a DNF.

To calculate the series points total, the 6 best performances are used (in a 7 race series), i.e. for riders who compete in all 7 races, their lowest scoring race is discarded.

In the event of a tie, the winner will be the rider with the most points in the most recent SCX Series race either (or both) rider has competed in, regardless of whether that race is included in their series total. The following examples (based on a 3 out of 4 race series for simplicity) should explain how this works in practice .

Tie Break Examples

Example 1

Rider 1 wins because they got the most points in the most recent race (Rd4). Rider 2 misses out because they didn’t actually race in the most recent race.

Example 2

In this case, Rider 2 wins because they got the most points in the most recent race (Rd3).

Example 3

Rider 1 wins because they got the most points in the most recent race. They clearly aren’t as good as Rider 2 – but rider 2 misses out because they didn’t race in the most recent race.

Example 4

In this case, Rider 2 wins because they did race in the most recent race and got the most points.

Example 5

For Rider 1, the result in Rd4 does not count to their series points, but it does give them the series win as they got more points than Rider 2 in the most recent race.
