Cyclocross Basics

Cyclocross is one of the most accessible forms of cycle sport, with racing for all levels and the whole family taking place throughout the autumn and winter months.

Scotland boasts some of the best courses for cyclocross - with a diverse mix of urban, rural and coastal venues hosting grass-roots racing in an inclusive and welcoming environment.

What is cyclocross?

Cyclocross takes place in off-road venues such as public parks and other open spaces. Surfaces can include grass, mud, gravel and sand. Courses are short and winding (1-3km in length), enabling multiple laps to be completed within a set time (30-60 minutes depending on age and ability).

Courses often feature obstacles such as hurdles and sand pits, forcing riders to dismount and carry or run with their bikes. Some courses are more ‘technical’ than others, featuring tight single-track trails, tree roots and other obstacles.

What will I need?

You’ll need a bike with off-road tyres. For most local races you can use an MTB but at competitive level you will need a cyclocross bike. Cyclocross bikes are very similar to road bikes, with 700c wheels, rigid frames and forks and dropped handlebars. However, there are significant differences; cyclocross bikes have wider knobbly tyres, slighter lower gearing, different frame geometry, more clearance for mud and either cantilever or disc brakes.

Do I need a race license?

For most regional races you won’t need to be a British Cycling member but will be required to buy a day license on top of the race entry fee.

If you’re going to be racing regularly, it makes sense to get a British Cycling Bronze Race Membership with which you get a provisional license which will get you into most races.

You’ll need a license if you want to race the Scottish Cyclocross Series.
