Scottish CX 2023 Series: Race Day Details

As the Scottish CX series for 2023 rapidly approaches, with Round 1 at Kinneil Estate on 17th September, we provide further details on some essential elements for your race day.

Race Day Timetables

Throughout the series, we aim to create a relatively standardised race day timetable. This means that all Scottish CX series races offer the same categories (matching those set by British Cycling / Scottish Cycling) and for Youth races and above, these will be in the same order. Note though, that some races do have specific requirements which mean that race start times may be adjusted slightly and so details issued by race organisers should always be checked prior to your race day.

Races for Under 12 riders and below are not run as series events and race organisers exercise their discretion in how and where these races fit into their race day. Organising Under 12 races requires significant extra resources and these races may, depending on the requirements of specific venues, be in a slightly different area from the main course, and may be a different times of day in different rounds. Parents should ensure that they check the race details carefully before each round.

Gridding

To ensure safe and fair racing, all races for Youth and above are gridded in advance, reducing the risk of riders being “out of position” and also removing the risks associated with riders rushing to the start line to secure the best position.

Race gridding is determined by an algorithm developed by commissaries and applied by them in conjunction with series timing partners. Details of how this applied are available here.

Although not required, race commissaires do routinely support the safe and fair running of U12 races by encouraging club coaches and marshal’s to prepare and get the riders lined up for the start of the race. This helps with safe and fair racing by eliminating the rush to the start or help avoid the youngsters standing around in inclement weather for longer than necessary in their bid to be first on the start line.
